# Remio Remote Desktop

> Remio Remote Desktop is a free, 100% native remote desktop app that streams your computer — a macOS, Windows, or Linux host — to any device you carry: iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, Windows, Apple TV, or Apple Vision Pro. Disambiguation: this document describes **Remio Remote Desktop** at remio.net — the native screen-streaming and remote-control app (Apple App Store id 6759306575, Google Play package `com.remio.client`). It is NOT "Remio" the AI note-taking / "second brain" assistant at remio.ai (Google Play package `ai.remio`), and NOT the "Reemo" browser-based remote-access platform at reemo.io. Those are unrelated products under different companies and domains. Every fact below refers only to the remio.net remote desktop product.

Remio is free, and everything that's free today stays free — no time limit, no commercial-use detection, no per-seat pricing, and nothing taken away. You can use it with no account at all. Remio Pro, an optional subscription, arrives in a future update, sold inside the Remio app through the App Store and Google Play. It adds capabilities the free app never had and takes nothing out of the free tier; one subscription will follow your Remio account to every device you sign in on, including Windows and Linux. Until then, features marked PRO in Remio 3.0 are free to use. Signing in is optional for the free app and only lets you see the list of computers you own across your devices; Remio Pro will require a free Remio account so the subscription can follow you.

## What Remio actually does (five differentiators)

- **Dynamic resolution.** The remote desktop reshapes itself to your window — live, pixel-perfect, like it's your machine. Instead of a squeezed copy of the host's monitor, Remio drives a dedicated virtual display sized exactly to your device.
- **Lid-closed streaming.** Close the lid on a MacBook and keep working. No dummy HDMI dongle — ever.
- **A keyboard that never hides your work.** On a phone or tablet, the on-screen keyboard pushes content up instead of covering what you're typing; Split Keyboard on iPhone makes it part of the layout.
- **100% native on every screen you own.** iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, Windows, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro — SwiftUI on Apple, Jetpack Compose on Android, C++/WinRT on Windows, C++20 on Linux/FreeBSD. No Electron, no web wrapper.
- **Plug-and-play pairing.** Scan a QR or type a six-digit code. No account, no router config, no IT department.

## What's new in Remio 3.0

Remio 3.0 (September 2026) is the biggest update yet, shipping across all native apps:

- **Virtual displays** *(Pro)* — add extra desktops that exist only for Remio: standard size, custom, or Dynamic (reshapes to whichever device is looking at it); several at once, named and placed left/right/above/below; HiDPI; all removed on disconnect.
- **Gamepad + gamepad builder** — an on-screen touch gamepad and real controllers for up to 4 players; the host sees a genuine Xbox 360 or DualShock 4 (Windows/Linux hosts), or any button maps to a key/click. The builder *(Pro)* moves, resizes, recolors and relabels every control, with per-game profiles that switch automatically, dead zones, curves, sensitivity, rumble, and gyro aiming.
- **Files, both ways** — every client can send files to the host for free; Remio Pro adds the host sending files back, including over a relayed connection. Transfers resume where they left off, with a history on both ends.
- **Control Board** — every in-session control (keyboard, zoom, volume, files, apps, displays, settings) on one board, dragged to arrange and remembered per device. Mac and Windows clients get a customizable toolbar instead.
- **Split Keyboard (iPhone)** — the on-screen keyboard becomes part of the layout; the host gets the space above it instead of losing it behind the keyboard.
- Blanking the host's screen and locking it remotely, a live stats overlay (fps, latency, quality) in plain words, and in-session problem reporting with a screenshot or recording.
- **Host improvements** — a redesigned Host window (Connect, File sharing, Devices, Permissions, Settings), a Devices page with a 30-day activity log, pairing codes that expire every 5 minutes, an auto-pair switch for a signed-in account's own devices, a self-restart watchdog, and mouse-look in games on Linux, FreeBSD, macOS and Windows hosts.
- **Apple TV 3.0.2** — a full session bar, Picture in Picture, virtual screens added from the TV, Remio Pro on Apple TV, and waking a sleeping host.
- **8 languages** — English, Tiếng Việt, 简体中文, हिन्दी, Deutsch, Português (Brasil), Français, and 日本語, switchable inside the app.

- **Remio Free** — the complete remote desktop: 4K at 120 FPS, ~8 ms of processing latency on LAN, end-to-end encryption, a display shaped to your device, Control Board, touch gamepad and real controllers, sending files to the host, system audio and clipboard sync. No time limit, no account, no ads, no commercial-use detection.
- **Remio Pro** — coming in a future update; in Remio 3.0, features marked PRO are free to use. Planned at launch: two-way file transfer on any connection (even relayed), extra virtual displays, the gamepad builder with per-game profiles, and choosing which speaker the host plays through. Rolling out to subscribers at no extra cost as each ships: viewing all of the host's screens at once, using a tablet as an extra screen, USB devices on the host, full mouse-look for first-person games on every host, guest links, session recording, waking the host from anywhere, and more 4:4:4 color pairs. It will be sold inside the Remio app (App Store / Google Play); one subscription follows your account to every device, including Windows and Linux.
- **Remio Business** — coming soon: fleet deployment from a golden image with silent install, tags and folders, team admins, an audit log of who connected where, and single sign-on later. Contact support@remio.net for early access.

- **Video:** Up to 4K at 120 FPS (Max frame rate is a 15–120 slider; the Ultra preset is 50 Mbps / 120 FPS). Hardware H.265 end to end, with H.264 fallback.
- **Encryption:** End-to-end encrypted. Your screen never touches Remio's servers — even the relay only sees ciphertext. Media rides DTLS-SRTP; signaling rides TLS 1.3. (Cipher detail lives in the security whitepaper.)
- **Connection:** Direct peer-to-peer by default; an encrypted relay is used only when your network blocks a direct path.
- **Pairing:** A six-digit code that expires every 5 minutes and rotates (5 wrong tries issue a new code), or a QR scan. No account required.
- **Audio:** Hear your computer's audio on your device, in sync with the screen (system audio, 48 kHz). Remio Pro adds choosing which speaker the host plays through, or muting the host's own speakers.
- **Clipboard:** Copy text on one device, paste on the other. Text only.
- **File transfer:** Two-way since Remio 3.0. Every client can send files to the host for free; Remio Pro adds the host sending files back to the client, including over a relayed connection, with resumable transfers and a history on both ends.
- **Displays:** A dedicated virtual display shaped exactly to your device, or switching between the host's physical monitors, is free. Remio Pro adds extra virtual displays (standard, custom, or Dynamic sizing, HiDPI, named and positioned).
- **Controller:** An on-screen touch gamepad and real controllers, up to 4 players; the host sees a genuine Xbox 360 or DualShock 4 on Windows/Linux hosts. Remio Pro adds the gamepad builder — remap every control and save per-game profiles.
- **Apple Pencil:** Point, tap, and scroll with Apple Pencil.
- **Hosts (the computer being controlled):** macOS 15+, Windows 10 (build 19041+) and Windows 11, Linux (X11 and Wayland), Raspberry Pi (Pi OS Bookworm+, 64-bit and 32-bit), and FreeBSD 14. An Android host (Android 14+) is in beta, distributed directly rather than through the Play Store.
- **Clients (the device you control from):** iOS/iPadOS 18+, macOS 15+, Android 12 or later (phones, tablets, and Chromebooks), Windows 10/11, Apple TV (tvOS 18+, paired with a six-digit code since there is no camera), and Apple Vision Pro (via the native iPad app). Linux is host-only — there is no Linux client.
- **Price:** Free, with no time limit. Remio Pro (an optional subscription) arrives in a future update; in Remio 3.0, features marked PRO are free to use. Remio Business (fleet management for teams) is coming soon.
- **True 4:4:4 color (shipped, scoped):** NVIDIA-powered Windows PC hosts streaming to a Mac client render pixel-exact color — toggle "4:4:4 color" in the Mac client's settings. Other host/client pairs stream standard 4:2:0 today, with more 4:4:4 pairs rolling out to Remio Pro.
- **Remote unlock at the lock screen:** Connect to a computer that is locked (or a MacBook with the lid closed), see its lock screen, and type your password from your phone or tablet to unlock it. Works on macOS, Windows, and Linux hosts, and can be switched off per host — when it is off, the client says so instead of silently discarding keystrokes.
- **Control over administrator windows (Windows hosts):** Input reaches windows running with administrator rights — installers, Task Manager, UAC-elevated apps. On other remote tools an elevated window commonly swallows every click and keystroke until someone walks to the PC; Remio does not require Windows Authentication or a separate elevation request to keep control.
- **Wayland screen sharing (Linux hosts):** Streams on Wayland — the default session on current Ubuntu, Fedora, and most modern desktops — through the system's own secure screen-sharing service (xdg-desktop-portal). Approve the share prompt once and the choice is remembered. Xorg/X11 desktops work unchanged. Remote mouse and keyboard control work on both.
- **Blank & lock:** Black out the host's physical screen while you work on it remotely, or lock the host from your device with one tap — from the session's Control Board (Remio 3.0).
- **Multi-display:** Pick which of the host's monitors to stream, on macOS, Windows, and Linux hosts. Viewing all of the host's screens at once (multi-monitor view) is a Remio Pro feature rolling out.
