§01 Getting started

Getting started

Install, pair, and connect — no account, no setup gymnastics.

What is Remio?
Remio is a remote desktop app that lets you access your computer from any device — iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Android. It streams your entire desktop in real-time with ultra-low latency, so it feels like you are sitting right in front of it. Think of it as a window into your computer, wherever you are. Unlike older tools like TeamViewer or AnyDesk, Remio is built from scratch with modern tech — 100% native apps, hardware-accelerated streaming, and end-to-end encryption by default.
How do I set it up?
It takes about 2 minutes:
  1. Install the Remio Host app on the computer you want to access (macOS).
  2. Install the Remio Client on the device you want to view from (iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Android).
  3. Both devices show a pairing code — enter it and you are connected.
No account required. No complicated network setup. No port forwarding. It just works.
Do I need an account?
No. Remio works without any account or sign-up. Just install, pair with a code, and connect. We believe privacy starts with not requiring your personal information in the first place.
What devices are supported?
Client (view from): iOS (iPhone & iPad), macOS, Windows, and Android.
Host (access remotely): macOS and Windows.

All apps are 100% native to each platform — so they feel fast and right at home on every device. No Electron. No web wrappers.
Is Remio free?
Yes. Remio is completely free — all features included. 4K/60FPS streaming, end-to-end encryption, multiple device pairs, everything. No trial, no time limit, no restrictions. We believe great software should be accessible to everyone.
§02 Performance

Performance

Latency, frame rate, resolution, and bandwidth — the numbers behind the feel.

How fast is Remio?
On a local network, Remio typically achieves under 16ms latency — less than one frame at 60FPS. You literally cannot perceive the delay. Over the internet, latency depends on your distance and connection, but most users see 20–40ms on a good connection. Remio connects your devices directly and uses hardware-accelerated streaming to keep latency as low as physically possible. See the side-by-side benchmarks or read 7 ways to reduce remote desktop lag.
Can I play games through Remio?
Absolutely. Remio supports up to 4K at 60FPS with hardware-accelerated streaming, gamepad/controller input, and low-latency audio. It is built for fast-paced content — games, video editing, 3D work. Play your Steam library on your iPad from the couch? That is exactly what Remio for cloud gaming is built for. See our step-by-step iPad gaming guide.
What resolution and FPS does it support?
Up to 4K (3840×2160) at 60FPS. The stream automatically adapts to your network conditions in real-time to maintain the smoothest possible experience. You can also manually adjust quality settings if you prefer.
Does it work over the internet or just local WiFi?
Both. On your local network, Remio connects your devices directly for the lowest possible latency — see how direct LAN connection works. Over the internet, Remio tries hard to make a direct device-to-device connection, and falls back to an encrypted relay if your network blocks that. Either way, the connection is always end-to-end encrypted.
How much bandwidth does it use?
It depends on your resolution and content:
  • 1080p / 60FPS: 5–15 Mbps
  • 4K / 60FPS: 15–40 Mbps
For context, Netflix 4K uses about 25 Mbps. Remio’s adaptive quality engine adjusts in real-time, so it works well even on variable connections. Static content (like a text editor) uses much less than fast-moving content (like a game).
§03 Security & privacy

Security & privacy

Encryption, data collection, and why our architecture matters.

Is Remio safe to use?
Yes. All connections are end-to-end encrypted using modern cryptography. Your stream goes directly between your devices — it never passes through our servers. We cannot see your screen even if we wanted to. Remio was built from day one with a zero-trust, privacy-first architecture. Read the Security page, the full security whitepaper, or the 2026 remote desktop security guide.
Is my data encrypted?
Yes, always. Every connection uses end-to-end encryption — your video, audio, input, and all control data are encrypted before leaving your device. This applies to both local and internet connections. The encryption keys are generated locally on your devices and never shared with us.
Does Remio collect my data?
No. Remio does not collect screen content, keystrokes, files, or personal data. We do not even require an account. The only data we process is the initial connection setup (to help your devices find each other), and that is it. Once connected, everything goes directly between your devices. Check our Privacy Policy for full details.
Can Remio see my screen?
No. Your screen content is end-to-end encrypted and streamed directly between your devices. Our servers only help with the initial connection setup — they never see your actual screen data. This is fundamentally different from tools like TeamViewer where the company’s servers can potentially access your stream.
What about AnyDesk and TeamViewer security breaches?
Both AnyDesk and TeamViewer have suffered major security breaches. AnyDesk was breached in early 2024 with attackers accessing their production systems. TeamViewer was compromised by state-sponsored hackers in 2024 as well. These breaches were possible because those tools route data through centralised servers. See Remio vs AnyDesk and Remio vs TeamViewer for the full architectural comparison.

Remio takes a different approach: direct device-to-device connections by default, no centralised data routing, no stored credentials on our servers, and a modern codebase built from scratch — not decades-old legacy code. Read about our zero-account philosophy.
§04 Features

Features

Audio, gamepads, Apple Pencil, file transfer, multi-monitor.

Does Remio support audio?
Yes. Remio streams your computer’s system audio alongside the video. You can hear everything — music, game sounds, video calls, notifications — just as if you were at your computer. Audio is synced with the video stream for a seamless experience.
Can I use a controller or gamepad?
Yes. Remio supports MFi controllers, Xbox controllers, PlayStation DualSense, and other Bluetooth gamepads. Connect your controller to your client device (iPhone, iPad, etc.) and Remio sends the input to the host — it works as if the controller is plugged directly into your computer.
Does Apple Pencil work?
Yes. Apple Pencil input is fully supported on iPad. Pressure sensitivity and tilt data are transmitted to the host computer, so you can use drawing apps, annotate documents, or navigate with precision. It is great for creative work like Photoshop, Illustrator, or Procreate workflows that run on your Mac.
Can I transfer files?
Coming soon

File transfer is on our roadmap and actively being developed. It will allow you to drag-and-drop files between your client device and host computer over the same end-to-end encrypted connection. In the meantime, you can use cloud storage (iCloud, Google Drive, etc.) to move files between devices.
Does it support multiple monitors?
Coming soon

Multi-monitor support is on our roadmap. You will be able to switch between monitors or view them side-by-side. Currently, Remio streams your primary display. Follow our roadmap for updates on this feature.
§05 Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting

Cannot connect, laggy stream, no audio — quick fixes for common issues.

I cannot connect — what should I do?
Try these steps in order:
  1. Make sure both the Host and Client are running and on the same network (for local connections).
  2. Double-check your pairing code — it refreshes periodically.
  3. Check that your firewall is not blocking Remio. The Host needs to accept incoming connections.
  4. On macOS, make sure you have granted the required permissions (Screen Recording, Accessibility) in System Settings.
  5. Restart both the Host and Client apps.
Still stuck? Check our documentation or reach out to us at support@remio.net.
The stream is laggy — how do I fix it?
Lag usually comes from network issues. Here is what to try:
  1. Switch to a 5GHz WiFi network (not 2.4GHz) — this makes a huge difference.
  2. Move closer to your WiFi router, or use Ethernet on the host computer.
  3. Lower the resolution in Remio settings (1080p is less demanding than 4K).
  4. Close bandwidth-heavy apps (downloads, video calls, streaming).
  5. If you are on the internet (not local), try connecting during off-peak hours.
Remio’s adaptive quality engine should handle most situations automatically, but these tips help in tough conditions.
No audio — what is wrong?
If you are not hearing audio from the remote computer:
  1. Make sure audio is not muted on your client device (check the volume).
  2. Check that audio output on the host computer is working (play something locally to test).
  3. On macOS, Remio installs a virtual audio driver to capture system sound. Make sure it was not removed or disabled.
  4. Restart the Remio Host app — this reinitialises the audio capture.
If the issue persists, check our docs or contact support.
How do I grant permissions on macOS?
Remio Host needs two macOS permissions to work:

Screen Recording — so Remio can capture your screen to stream it.
Accessibility — so Remio can send keyboard and mouse input from your remote device.

The app will prompt you to grant these when you first launch it. You can also manage them manually:
Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, find “Screen Recording” and “Accessibility,” and toggle Remio Host on.

You may need to restart Remio Host after granting permissions.
What is a relay connection? How do I connect directly?
A relay connection means your stream is being routed through an encrypted Remio relay instead of going directly between your devices. This works perfectly fine — your stream is still end-to-end encrypted — but it adds extra latency, typically 30–100ms compared to under 10ms for a direct connection.

Common causes
  • Devices are on different networks (e.g. mobile data vs. WiFi)
  • Router firewall blocking direct connections
  • Strict corporate, hotel, or university network restrictions
How to get a direct connection
  1. Make sure both devices are on the same WiFi network.
  2. Check that your firewall is not blocking Remio.
  3. If connecting from a different network, set up port forwarding on your router.
See our step-by-step guide: how to connect directly →

Do not worry if you stay on relay — Remio optimises the relay path for the lowest possible latency, and many users will not notice a difference for everyday use.
