Apple Pencil works with Remio the moment it's paired to your iPad — no settings to flip, no drivers to install. Remio treats it as an ultra-precise pointer for your remote Mac, Windows, or Linux desktop: perfect for landing clicks on tiny menus, timeline handles, and spreadsheet cells that a fingertip tends to miss. One thing it isn't: a pressure-sensitive drawing tablet — the honest version of what it can and can't do is below.
Overview
On a remote desktop, Remio treats Apple Pencil the same way it treats your finger — as a touch point that drives the pointer of the computer you're controlling. What the Pencil adds isn't new data, it's a tip a fraction of the width of a fingertip, which makes it dramatically easier to land precise clicks and drags on small controls that were designed for a mouse, not a touchscreen.
This isn't tablet-style input. Remio's protocol carries position, taps, drags, and scroll — nothing about how hard you're pressing, how the Pencil is tilted, or whether it's hovering above the glass. If you're picturing a Wacom tablet plugged into your Mac, that's not what this is. Think of it instead as the most accurate trackpad you own.
Prerequisites
- iPad with a paired Apple Pencil — any generation (1st gen, 2nd gen, USB-C, or Pencil Pro).
- Remio Client installed on the iPad.
- A Mac, Windows, or Linux computer running Remio Host, already paired with your iPad — see getting started if you haven't done this yet.
01 · Pair the Apple Pencil to the iPad
Pair the Pencil the standard way for your model. This step has nothing to do with Remio — it's the same pairing you'd do for any iPad app.
- Apple Pencil 1st gen — pop the cap, plug the Lightning end into the iPad, confirm the pair prompt.
- Apple Pencil 2nd gen — magnetically snap to the long side of the iPad. Pair prompt appears immediately.
- Apple Pencil USB-C — connect via the included USB-C cable (no Bluetooth pair needed; uses USB-C).
- Apple Pencil Pro — magnetically snap to a supported iPad Pro (M-series). The pair prompt covers squeeze and haptic feedback settings, which stay on the iPad.
Verify the Pencil shows as connected: Settings → Apple Pencil. Battery level should appear. There's nothing to set up on the Remio side — once iPadOS recognizes the Pencil, Remio already can too.
02 · Connect to your computer
Open Remio Client and pair with your host the normal way — scan a QR code or type the six-digit code shown on the host (see getting started if you haven't paired yet). There's no Pencil toggle to find in Settings; it works the instant you touch the stream.
03 · Use the Pencil as your pointer
Touch down anywhere on the streamed desktop and drag — the cursor moves relative to your motion, the same way it would on a trackpad, not by jumping straight to wherever the tip lands. Because Remio reads the Pencil's position with the same fidelity as a fine touch point, you can reliably tap a 12px checkbox or grab a thin window border on the remote desktop — something a fingertip makes needlessly hard.
What about pressure-sensitive drawing?
Short answer: not through Remio, not yet. The Pencil's pressure, tilt, and hover hardware exists, and iPadOS reads all of it — but Remio's data channel only carries pointer position, taps, drags, and scroll. A stroke in Photoshop, Procreate Dreams, ZBrush, or any other pressure-aware app on your remote desktop comes through as a flat, uniform line, no matter how hard or lightly you press.
If pressure-sensitive drawing is what you're after:
- Draw natively on the iPad — Procreate, Notes, or any iPad app gives you full pressure and tilt with zero compromise. Send the finished file to your Mac afterward using Remio's file transfer.

Palm rejection
Palm rejection happens at the iPadOS level, before Remio ever sees an event. Rest your hand on the screen while drawing or writing with the Pencil, exactly as you would in any iPad app — iPadOS discards the palm touch, and only the Pencil's own taps and drags ever reach Remio.
That means there's nothing to configure: rest your wrist normally, and only the tip generates input.
Troubleshooting
- Pencil taps aren't registering — open iPad Settings → Apple Pencil and confirm it shows as connected with battery remaining. Re-pair it if it doesn't.
- Cursor feels laggy or jumps around — confirm the connection is LAN P2P, not relay. Open the in-session connection info;
conn=p2pis what you want. Switch to 5 GHz Wi-Fi if both ends are on 2.4 GHz. - I want pressure-sensitive lines and Remio isn't giving me any — see "What about pressure-sensitive drawing?" above; this isn't a bug, it's a real gap in what the protocol carries today.
- Pencil Pro squeeze / double-tap gestures aren't doing anything on the desktop — those gestures stay on the iPad (they trigger local iPadOS shortcuts). Remio doesn't forward them.

Which Apple Pencil generations work with Remio?
All of them — 1st gen, 2nd gen, USB-C, and Pencil Pro. Remio uses the Pencil purely as a precise pointer, so there's no hardware-specific feature to unlock; anything iPadOS can pair, Remio can use.
Does Remio support pressure-sensitive drawing with Apple Pencil?
Not yet. Remio's input protocol sends pointer position, taps, drags, and scroll — it does not carry pressure, tilt, or hover data. A stroke in a remote app like Photoshop or Procreate Dreams will stay a uniform width no matter how hard you press. Does the cursor move like a graphics tablet or like a trackpad?
Like a trackpad. Touch down and drag the Pencil and the cursor moves relative to that motion — it doesn't jump to wherever the tip lands, the way an absolute tablet would.
Does palm rejection work?
Yes. Palm rejection happens on the iPad itself, before Remio ever sees a touch — rest your hand on the screen as you normally would while drawing or writing; only the Pencil's own taps and drags reach Remio.
What is the Pencil actually good for, if not pressure drawing?
