Getting started
Everything you need to go from an empty Mac to streaming it on your iPhone in under five minutes. Start here if Remio is brand new on the device.
- The five-minute setup walkthrough Download the host, grant permissions, install the client, scan the QR, stream.
- Granting screen recording and accessibility The two macOS permissions Remio needs, and why each one is required.
- Pairing devices with a PIN or QR code How proximity pairing works and what the host actually shows on screen.
System requirements
The minimum hardware and OS versions Remio supports, plus the network conditions needed for a low-latency session. Check here before you install if you are on older hardware.
- All host, client, and network requirements One canonical reference for macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and the network in between.
- macOS host requirements macOS 15 Sequoia and later, Apple Silicon preferred, Intel still supported.
- iOS and iPadOS client requirements iOS 18 and later. Universal binary for iPhone and iPad.
- Network and bandwidth notes What 5 GHz Wi-Fi, wired ethernet, and cellular each look like in practice.
Setup recipes
Step-by-step walkthroughs for the most common device pairings. Each recipe covers permissions, network setup, and the first thing to check when something does not work.
- Mac host to Mac client Pair two Macs on the same network or across the internet.
- Mac host to iPad client Pencil pressure, hardware keyboard, and Apple Magic Trackpad on iPad.
- Windows host to Mac client Reach a Windows desktop from a Mac with full input parity.
- Multi-monitor configuration Drive multiple displays from a single client, or mirror one host monitor to many.
Audio, input, and peripherals
Get audio, keyboard, mouse, gamepad, and Apple Pencil working as if the peripheral were plugged into the host directly.
- Audio routing setup Route host audio back to your client speakers with low latency.
- Audio troubleshooting Diagnose dropouts, crackling, and silent streams across macOS and Windows.
- Keyboard layout fixes Map non-US layouts, fix sticky modifiers, and rebind problematic keys.
- Gamepad and controller setup DualSense, Xbox, and MFi controllers — pairing, haptics, and rumble.
- Apple Pencil setup Pressure, tilt, and palm rejection on iPad — the desktop-side configuration.
Troubleshooting
When something is off — the stream stalls, audio drops, input feels heavy — the fixes that work are usually network and permission settings. Each guide names the symptom in plain language.
- The client cannot find the host Same network, firewall rules, local network permission, and pairing state.
- The stream feels laggy Step-by-step reductions in frame rate, resolution, and codec until it is smooth.
- No audio is coming through macOS audio routing, the host audio capture toggle, and what to check first.
- Keyboard or mouse input is not working Accessibility permission re-grant, hardware keyboard detection, and trackpad gestures.
Networking and direct connection
Remio prefers a direct device-to-device path between the two endpoints. When that is not possible the session falls back to a TURN relay. This is where to learn how the connection is actually chosen.
- How direct connection works ICE, STUN, TURN, and why most home networks reach a direct path within seconds.
- Firewall and NAT setup Port-forwarding, double NAT, and corporate firewall workarounds.
- Dual GPU host setup Pick the right encoder when a host has both integrated and discrete GPUs.
- Security architecture overview End-to-end encryption, key exchange, and the zero-knowledge signaling design.
- Security whitepaper The full cryptographic spec — protocols, ciphers, threat model, and audit notes.
Developers and protocol
Hooks for engineers who want to know what is on the wire. The data channel and signaling are FlatBuffers binary protocols with public schemas.
- Developer reference and SDKs How Remio is built, what is open, and what we publish for integrators.
- How it works end to end The streaming pipeline from capture to encode to decode to display.
